Class 7 Classwork

STROKE: In this screenshot, I used the "stroke" tool to create a circle and rectangle on top of my existing image by selecting "edit+stroke".  Here is a screenshot:

PASTE INTO: In this screenshot, I used the "paste into" tool to paste the photo of my dog into a rounded rectangle section that I had already selected:

TRANSPARENCY (OPACITY): In this screenshot, you will see a picture of me holding my dog the day I picked him up with the previous picture of him with his underbite showing over it with a "see-through" effect.  I did this by using the layers toolbox in GIMP and adjusting the opacity of the image I superimposed over my background.

TEXT: After fiddling around with the transparency of the images themselves, I entered several different colors and fonts of text of my dog's name and adjusted each one's transparency, also using the layers toolbox. Here is a screenshot:

SCALE: For one of my midterms, I included a picture of the Eiffel Tower.  For this particular exercise, I scaled the image down from its original size to half its size, KEEPING the same aspect ratio.  This second photo attached is the same image, scaled down, only this time changing the aspect ratio.
Here is the 2nd shot:

Susan B Anthony Gold Dollar Resizing

Here are my two Susan B Anthony gold dollars.  The first is using GIMP again, as you can see from the sloppiness in my painting skills.

Here is my Susan B Anthony using MS Word:

As you can see, I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to draw using MS Word, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Class 6 Silver Dollar Using GIMP

Hey fellow classmates, so as you can see below, I am having major troubles with GIMP.  All week I have been deleting and re-downloading (if you ever have to reinstall, be very careful... I had a lot of adware a couple times I re-downloaded).  For this one, Please feel free to shed ANY and all light how I can make a better looking coin.  I found it way easier with ms word making straight lines

My Silver Dollar Exercise for Class 6

Here I have a pretty simple design with Gasson Hall on a silver dollar and a scroll across the bottom that signifies our class.  I used the line tools in MS Word as well as the banner tool and edited the font for an older feel.

Class 5, Assignment 10

It took me about 20 minutes to do this assignment.

Class 5, Assignment 5

As mentioned in the attached youtube video, "What is perfection?"  In today's society, you can't even walk down the street without seeing a supermodel pasted on the side of a bus, billboard, or other advertisement.  Is this perfection?  Should we all be striving for a tiny waist, huge biceps and breasts, and a perfectly chiseled jawline?  Some argue that, yes, indeed, we should.  However, I would counter that we should not be asking "is this perfection," and instead, be asking "is this normal?"  And this is where photoshop comes in to play.  As seen in the attached video, even the most wealthy, sought-after celebrities use highly trained professionals to alter and photoshop photos in efforts to look "perfect."  I believe that, although it is nice to "feast one's eyes" on an attractive person advertising Corona beer in close to nothing on an exotic beach, we need to take into consideration that these images are, most of the time, a figment of a photoshopper's imagination.

Midterm #10

Hey guys, I had a class last Thursday night, so here is some of the classwork you all did.  I created the house.  it actually looked great until the abstract shapes came in to play.  I'm not much of a drawer.  But here is my work anyways:

The work I did in this exercise was my first experience using MS Word to manipulate images and shapes this way.  It is a midterm exercise from the Immersive Education course that I am taking at Boston College.  The course is called Discovering Computer Graphics.  For details, visit the immersive BC portal at http://ImmersiveEducation.org/@/bc

Midterm #9

Here are a few screenshots of my first go-around messing with MS Word image editing.  It's not much, but it is also my first experience.  I had no idea this was possible in a word processing program! It is a midterm exercise from the Immersive Education course that I am taking at Boston College.  The course is called Discovering Computer Graphics.  For details, visit the immersive BC portal at http://ImmersiveEducation.org/@/bc

Meshmoon Avatar

Here are 2 screenshots of my teammate's avatar and my avatar in a 3D world, edited in 2D using GIMP:

As you can see, I added stars, our initials, and a baseball to the playground.

Meshmoon Exploration

Here are a few snapshots of Greg, my team  member, and I exploring a virtual school in Meshmoon.
Here, Greg and I met up for the first time in Meshmoon in what looks to be a hallway.
Here, Greg and I have gone down the hall into a classroom
Here, Greg and I hear "nature calling" and came into the bathroom.
Here, Greg and I are in what looks to be a teacher's lounger with the playground right outside
And finally, let the games begin.  Here we are at the school playground.

And here is a screenshot of an edited/completely different avatar using Meshmoon:

As you can see, the robot avatar has gone from gray to blue

Bent's Old Fort Gets the "Minecraft" Treatment

I, myself, have never played Minecraft, however, I am told that players "run" through different landscapes on video game consoles, smartphones, etc.  Now, Minecraft is actually being used for something other than games, although, it is being used for something just as fun.

As seen in the video above, immersive education is pioneering new ways for people to feel as if they are IN a scenario/landscape, even when hundreds or thousands of miles away.  This undoubtedly will revolutionize the concept of the words "field trip".  Now I just wish I could go back to elementary school and take advantage of some of this cool new technology!

This is an assignment from the Immersive Education course that I am taking at Boston College. The course is called Discovering Computer Graphics. For details, visit the immersive BC portal at http://ImmersiveEducation.org/@/bc

Colorado Students Bring Bent's Old Fort to the World

It's nice knowing that you're not all alone when learning something new.  Here, at BC, this is my first immersive education class.  At first, admittedly, I was petrified.  I didn't know how to be counted for as far as attendance, I thought that I would need a greater knowledge of computer skills, and just overall felt very insecure.  But once I had my first class, I saw how interesting this stuff can be.

Seen above is a screenshot of a news story done on an immersive education CLUB formed in Colorado.  In the image, you can see part of Bent's Old Fort, a Sante Fe Trail trading post.  This club is recreating Bent's Old Fort in Minecraft (as seen below), and will eventually share it online with the world, so that anyone, whether on the other side of the world, or in La Junta, Colorado, can enjoy this attraction from their own computers!
